Mount Elwell Trail Realignment

Project Name: Mount Elwell Trail Restoration and Realignment

County: Plumas Forest: Plumas District: Beckwourth

Miles of Trail: 1.2 miles Designated Use: multiple-use

Type of Work to be Performed: realign and rehabilitate an excessively steep and heavily eroded section of trail on the south face of Mount Elwell, so it is more able to sustain the impacts of human traffic and the environment. Specific project objectives include: protection from watershed contamination, reduction of erosion, increased public safety, enhanced recreation opportunities, and the creation of jobs through hiring Plumas County residents who will be responsible for doing the work, leading volunteer crews and educating the public.

Funding Allocated: Plumas County Resource Advisory Committee usig Title II funds

Project Status: In the Summer of 2009 a proposed reroute of Mount Elwell Trail, from Mud Lake to the Long Lake Trail intersection, was flagged and mapped by SBTS volunteer staff. Forest Service "specialists" from the Beckwourth Ranger District then walked and surveyed the proposed route. No concerns were raised from the visit and currently the project is in the NEPA (environmental study) process. Construciton is slated to begin once the snow melts in Summer 2011.

How You Can Help: We need volunteers to help us get the work done alongside our locally hired Trail Crew. Join us for a Trail Daze event, where we leverage our paid Trail Crew, utilize and reward volunteers, and have a good time in the mountains.
