Sierra Buttes Lookout Trail Restoration

Project Name: Sierra Buttes Lookout Trail Restoration

County: Sierra Forest: Tahoe District: Yuba River

Miles of Trail: 2.8 miles (singetrack trail only, does not include dirt road sections) Designated Use: multi-use

Type of Work to be Performed:

  • Rehabilitate the Sierra Buttes Lookout Trail, which is considered a high-use trail and is one of the main recreation attractions in the Lakes Basin Recreation Area
  • Provide heavy maintenance to damaged sections of tread, in order to make the trail more able to withstand the impact of human traffic and wet winters. This trail has not received any regular maintenance for more than 10 years and is in desperate need of upkeep
  • Reduce erosion and improve watershed quality by performing sustainable, Forest Service approved, trail restoration techniques
  • Create employment by hiring a local trail crew

Funding Allocated: $20,450 - Sierra County Resource Advisory Committee using Title II funds.

Project Status: Work begins in Summer 2011. SBTS has committed to an In-Kind Match towards the grant funds of $7,522 through the following contributions: volunteer labor ($4,800), materials and food for volunteers ($2,472), and on-site monitoring ($250).

How You Can Help: We need volunteers to help with the restoration work. Check our Trail Daze event schedule to see when we're scheduled to host a volunteer work day in 2011.
