TRAIL DAZE
trail news:
The North Yuba Extension will be done by May, with your help…
Why all the excitement about the North Yuba Extension?
- It's the only non-motorized trail in the Downieville area
- Once completed, it will span from Downieville to Rocky Rest
- We will be riding it for the May Epic, sponsored by Marin Bicycles
We are committed to finishing this trail this month – but we need your help to do it.
Anyone who can come up in April will get a free paid vacation(food + housing) in exchange for some volunteer trail work hours with us. Our trail builders will be out there every day pushing this project through, so you can join them during the week or weekend – whatever your schedule will allow. Those who can get up there this month will make the difference. We will have a new trail this season thanks to people like you.
Email Wayno to tell him when you're coming or call the Yuba House 530-289-2766.
Lets make this vision a reality! (sounds corny, but I mean it)

Trail Daze are a great way to get out into the beautiful wilderness, suck down some fresh mountain air, and perform some much needed restoration and repair on our trails. Trail Daze #33 | North Yuba Extension
A showing of 19 amazing volunteers showed up and did the work of probably 40 men and women. Our crew was one of the most productive that we've ever had... probably because 90% were all seasoned Trail Daze volunteers with more than 10 Trail Daze events under their belts. We got a couple new additions including Artek, David, and Sean, who came out for his second Trail Daze ever, which was great. Quincy really rules when it comes to bringing fun, unique, talented people to the crew. The extension is looking great and we made a lot of progress. A bit more to go until it's complete, but we made a big dent in the work load. Thanks to Sarge, Greg, Dave O, David from the Hub, Henry, Wayno, Troy , Beevis, Van, Todd, Sean, Melinda, Chris, Ron, Tim, Nica, Brett + Artek. Also, shout out to the Hub who provided the food for this event.

Trail Daze #32 | Empire Creek
Well, honestly, thing just keep getting better. Mid November, rain and all, and we still had our best turn out this year for Trail Daze. 38 people! Thanks so much to those who came out, especially the new additions to the crew. We had at least 8 or 10 new SBTS volunteers this weekend. With a positive group effort, all the planned work on Empire was completed and then some. SBTS volunteers contributed 200 hours of volunteer work to this trail. Thanks again for all of your efforts. We appreciate your continued support, and hard work that you put into these trails.

Trail Daze #29 | Lakes Basin: Bear Lakes Loop
This was a beautiful day for trail work out in the Lakes Basin. 30 volunteers traveled from as far as 300 miles away to help out on the beautiful rocky trail that sweeps around Bear Lake. We did a lot of great work, contributing more than 150 hours of work to a trail system that hasn't had attention in quite some time. Thanks for all those who came out to volunteer their time!

Trail Daze #28 | Chimney Rock - Sponsored by TSD Engineering’s Chris and Trista Schulze
You’ve gotta hand it to the Schulze’s. Even with the new addition to the family, Mia, they found the time to host a trail work day on a beautiful Memorial Day weekend. They also managed to convince about 17 of their riding buddies to give up the better part of a perfect riding day just to dig in the dirt. And to top it off, they agreed to work on a trail other than their adopted trail of 3rd Divide. Thank you Chris and Trista!!
Thank you also to everyone in the group who made a HUGE effort removing the inner sough and outer berm on Empire Creek Trail, and worked to establish a 2% out-slope on the trail bed to accommodate proper water drainage. This group produced one of the most effective volunteer efforts by any group who has worked with SBTS. They finished sloughing and berming the lower-most 3,000 linear feet of Empire Creek Trail in just three hours! This group Kicks-Ass.
This work day is part of a larger effort to restore Empire Creek Trail to a sustainable condition. SBTS received a small grant to remove flowing water from the trail bed.
Thanks again from SBTS.

Trail Daze #25 | North Yuba Trail
The weather cooperated and allowed us to get some much needed work done on the North Yuba Trail. 13 volunteers contributed 78 hours of work creating more sustainable switch backs, removing 2 stumps, and building 2 rock walls. Special thanks to Vaughn, Mark, Patrick, Malinda, Todd, Steve, and Metal for all your hard work.

Trail Daze #24 | Bullards Bar
This Trail Daze was a huge success. SBTS partnered with BONC for this day of fun work in the February sun. 30 volunteers worked over 120 hours on 10 miles of trail systems in Bullards Bar. 4 to 5 years of storm damage were repaired, 2 culverts were built, 2 down trees were removed, and brush was cleared. This is not part of the stewardship’s normal territory, but all members and board agreed that this is a great place to ride or hike, and we should help take care of it. Thank you to everyone who came out, we couldn't’t have done it without you!

Trail Daze #23 | Second Divide
The air was crisp and there was hoarfrost seeping up through the ground, creating a crunching sound on the ground as you walked over it. The cold weather, however, did not deter people from coming out and working on Second Divide. 10 volunteers contributed 50 hours of work leveling the trail bed and maintaining erosion. Extra special thanks to Greg Carter and his crew for all their efforts.

Trail Daze | Sunrise Trail
This was our biggest trail day to date. Over 70 volunteers contributed over 400 hours of work to complete the Sunrise Trail, traveling from as far as Colorado. The effort was amazing and the trail was finally opened. Thank you to everyone who came out for this amazing event, we could not have done it without you.

Trail Daze | Gray Eagle Creek
Forty two exceptional people gathered in downtown Downieville for the volunteer trail work day. After loading up on breakfast burritos and packing a lunch, volunteers organized into two work parties. One party that would head west to brush-out Halls Ranch and Fiddle Creek Ridge trails. The other party would go north into the high country to turnpike a section of trail through a wetland area on Gray Eagle Creek trail. Here are some photos of what took place on Gray Eagle Creek trail.
The two parties combined for 180 volunteer labor hours. Thanks folks!
Special thanks to Judy Schaber from Plumas National Forest for helping to organize the work on Gray Eagle Creek trail, and to Joe Chavez from Tahoe National Forest for his work on Halls Ranch and Fiddle Ridge trails.

Trail Daze | Gray Eagle Creek
This was the second scheduled Trail Daze on Gray Eagle Creek trail. Most of the twenty eight folks that showed up had attended the first work day on May 15. Most everyone knew the hard work they were in for ahead of time. Judy Schaber, from the Plumas Forest had a load of gravel, lumber and rebar delivered to the trail head, so we were ready to continue turnpiking the 250' section of damaged trail bed. The crew worked efficiently, breaking off into groups of four and five. Group detail included: culvert digging, rock excavation, rock crushing, peeler pole installation, pole drilling, rebar pounding, felt paper lining, rock placement, gravel shoveler, and gravel hauler. Lucky for us we had three motorized wheel-barrels on hand, one of which was Jim Jacobsen's personal machine. This was an incredible effort on everyone's part. Thank you, and we hope people can enjoy riding this trail for generations to come.
In all, 300 hours of volunteer trail work went into operation "Turnpike". We thank all the volunteers for their support and hard work. Also, a special thanks to Sac Brew for providing the refreshments and to Downieville Grocery for supplying all the sandwich materials.
