Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship’s Work
Since the day we bought our first chainsaw in 2003, our focus has been strengthening rural mountain communities, using trails as the tool. More than 200 miles of new singletrack later, that motivation still rings true. This is how we do it.
Trail Projects
Since 2003, SBTS has built more than 220 miles of new singletrack trail in the Lost Sierra and maintained another 3,000 miles. From Truckee to Downieville, Mt. Hough in Quincy and Beckwourth Peak in Portola, our trails are enjoyed by millions of cyclists, hikers, equestrians, trail runners, and moto riders.
Trail Maintenance
Keeping Trails Running Smoothly
The annual trail maintenance work completed by SBTS’ Pro Trail Crews is more important than ever due to federal staffing and budget cuts that have impacted the ability of the Forest Service to run large trail crews in our region. We take the responsibility of keeping trails open and safe seriously: Our crews maintain some 300 miles of trail across four national forests and nine ranger districts each year. Protecting access, supporting local economies and preserving the outdoor experiences we all value is critical to our mission. If you ride, run, hike or explore in the Lost Sierra, now’s the time to give back.
Connected Communities
The Connected Communities Vision aims to link 15 mountain towns via singletrack, improving trail access and connectivity in order to strengthen the economies of rural communities, and encourage diverse user types to explore and recreate on public lands.
Fire Hardened Trails
By aligning trail development with forest management and wildfire mitigation, the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship Fire-Hardened Trails Prescription can enhance both recreational opportunities and the long-term sustainability of California's natural and cultural resources.
Our Races
Our race weekends bring thousands of outdoor enthusiasts together for an unforgettable experience on our world-class trails. Every participant gains a regional appreciation, helps fund trails and boosts the economies of the mountain communities we call home.
Youth Crew Programs
SBTS’s nationally recognized and award-winning Youth Crew Program provides local Lost Sierra teenagers with a holistic outdoor employment and education experience in a safe and inclusive environment.
Yuba Expeditions
Since 1991, our Yuba Expeditions bike shop has brought more than 100,000 tourists—and their dollars—to the Lost Sierra to help boost the local economy, while providing local employment. Featuring Santa Cruz and Marin demo bicycles, professional mechanics, and shuttle and trail guide services, Yuba Expeditions sends every dollar of income earned right back into our nonprofit.

“If all goes as planned, mountain bikers, off-road bikers and hikers would flood in, drawn by the opportunity to traverse from town to town a la the Swiss Alps. They would exult in the stark beauty of the landscape, spend oodles of money in local restaurants, bars and hotels, and then go home again…”
